Phone, tablet and PDA comparison
Phone vs tablet vs PDA for field teams: roles, screens, identification and battery, compared only on listed parameters.
Three classes, three roles
Field teams usually need more than one device class, because each class fits a different role. Phones fit communication and quick checks: pocket-sized, always at hand, with voice, messaging, cameras and positioning. Tablets fit records and reading: a large screen for maps, forms, checklists and drawings, with cameras and positioning for evidence. Handheld terminals fit identification-heavy rounds: scanning and reading asset tags, with a screen sized for confirmations rather than reading. Choosing one class for everything forces compromises; choosing by role avoids them.
Screen and handling
Phones on this site list 6.52 inch and 6.583 inch screens; tablets list 8.0 inch, 10.1 inch and 10.36 inch screens; the terminal range lists a 5.2 inch screen. Bigger screens suit reading and forms; smaller screens suit one-handed carrying and scanning. Weight is published only for one tablet listing, 1390 g for Ex Tablet10, so weight cannot be compared across the range from these listings. Handling with gloves, screen brightness in sunlight and drop tolerance are all questions for the quote request where the listings are silent.
Identification and connectivity
Identification is where the classes diverge most. Terminals list barcode, RFID, UHF and NFC reading as their core function. Phones list NFC on two models and fingerprint or face unlocking; tablets list positioning, altitude and compass functions. Connectivity overlaps: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth appear across classes, mobile network on several models, GPS-class positioning on most. The right question is not which class has the longest feature list, but which class reads the tags already on your assets and talks to the systems already on your site.
Battery and shift life
Battery figures are published per model and cannot be compared as if test conditions matched. The terminal range lists two tiers without assigning them to models; the tablet listings list 7000 mAh, 9000 mAh and 20000 mAh for different models; one phone listing publishes a full standby, talk, music and video set. Confirm expected shift life for your workload in the quote request, for each class you plan to deploy.
